I can't seem to find a way to subscribe as an email user
- where i would get periodic email of new topics
- where i could subscribe to topic via email
Not even sure if I can reply to a topic from email.

Yes, you can get email digests from the forum. Navigate to account --> preferences, and there you can determine if you want daily or weekly digests.
Unfortunately, you can't subscribe to a topic via email. If you see a topic of interest in your email digest, click on it and it will take you to the web interface, where you have a choice of very granular subscriptions levels for that topic (it's under 'Tracking').
And lastly, you can respond to a topic via email. Simply hit reply and respond using your email client, and your email will appear in the forum, inline with all the other replies.
We actually have a setting that can allow users to automatically watch all new topic.
Additionally you can watch all topics in a particular category from user prefs.
I'm creating a quick user guide for the forum to help transition people.
Key will be showing people how to get the same look-and-feel as being on a mailing list i.e. getting the information through email. I have selected "automatically track all topics" but if I go back into preferences, they are not there immediately, so this is a test of how that process works in reality to serve as a guide for others.
